Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, was an African American civil rights leader, Muslim minister, and activist. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925, Malcolm X became involved in criminal activity as a young adult and was imprisoned for several years before converting to Islam and joining the Nation of Islam (NOI) in the early 1950s. He quickly rose to prominence within the NOI and became known for his fiery speeches and advocacy for black empowerment and separatism. However, after leaving the NOI in 1964, Malcolm X began to distance himself from his earlier views and embraced a more inclusive and internationalist vision for racial justice. He was assassinated in 1965 at the age of 39 while giving a speech in New York City. Malcolm X's legacy as a powerful and controversial figure in the civil rights movement continues to be felt today, with his life and work inspiring generations of activists and scholars.
