Marvin Gaye was an American singer, songwriter, and musician who was one of the most popular and influential soul artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1939, Gaye began his career as a session musician for Motown Records before signing a solo recording contract in the 1960s. He achieved massive success with hits such as "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "What's Going On," and "Sexual Healing," and his smooth, soulful voice and innovative approach to music influenced countless artists in a variety of genres. In addition to his music, Gaye was known for his political activism, particularly around issues of civil rights and social justice. He tragically died in 1984 at the age of 44, after being shot by his own father during an argument. Gaye's music and legacy continue to be celebrated by fans and musicians around the world.
