Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., was an American professional boxer, civil rights activist, and cultural icon. Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1942, Ali began boxing as a child and quickly rose to prominence as a young athlete, winning a gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Throughout his career, Ali was known for his unparalleled skill, charisma, and trash-talking, as well as his unapologetic activism against racism and the Vietnam War. He won numerous boxing titles and awards, including three heavyweight championships and the distinction of being the first and only three-time lineal World Heavyweight Champion. Outside of the ring, Ali was an outspoken advocate for racial justice and human rights, famously refusing to be drafted into the Vietnam War on religious grounds and sacrificing his boxing career and facing legal consequences. Despite facing discrimination and opposition throughout his life, Ali remains one of the most celebrated and influential athletes in history, inspiring generations of athletes, activists, and fans with his courage, conviction, and determination.
